The shepherds’ experience
Imagine for a moment:
Shepherds, at the bottom of the economic scale, whose testimony was not even accepted in court, are visited by an angel announcing the arrival of the promised Messiah. The shepherds would find the Messiah wrapped in swaddling cloth and lying in a manger; which only prompted more questions and wonder.
Why is the promised Messiah a baby?
Where would they find the child?
Who else did the angel appear to?
Why didn’t the angel give a specific location of the baby? There are many mangers in Bethlehem.
Swaddling cloth is used to hold and comfort lambs at birth; why would a baby be wrapped in it?
Was the angel real or a hallucination?
Was the opening of heaven with song real?
How will they find this Messiah?
How can they announce the arrival while the Romans watch their every move?
How can they help the couple who just gave birth?
Who will assist the woman in labor?
Do religious leaders and elders need to witness the arrival?
As Levitical Shepherds, what obligations do they have to the church?
Does Scripture refer to this moment in a way that can confirm and comfort them?
In the blink of an eye, their humble lives become a perilous journey filled with hope, faith, confusion, and wonder, as they carry the greatest message ever told. How will they protect Jesus and ensure He thrives as they declare that the Messiah has come?

It is a great story and builds a case for why the Wise Men would travel months following a star, which was all but folklore and prophecy at the risk of being jailed for heresy.
